THE FRIENDS OF HERNE BAY MUSEUM
Welcome to the website of The Friends of Herne Bay Museum. We are a non-profit making group dedicated to helping keep a museum in the town, freely open to all, for residents and visitors alike.
The original museum was established in 1932, but its present incarnation was opened in 1996 and falls under the auspices of Canterbury City Council’s Museum Service. It is notable for being a seaside tourist attraction featuring local archaeological and social history. It includes fascinating prehistoric remains found locally, the Roman invasion and occupation of East Kent and the history of the town as a popular holiday resort. It’s also known for its local art exhibitions, and for the legendary World War II bouncing bomb.
The Friends was formed in 2010 after a short and successful campaign to keep the museum open when it nearly fell victim to the spending cuts that were the consequence of the credit crunch of 2008.
