Results of HBIB "Beat the Drought Competition"

Thank you to everyone who entered our "Beat The Drought" competition which was launched in April after the announcement of the hosepipe ban in the South East by Southern and South East Water Companies.

We are please to announce that the winner of the £50 prize and the water butt and compost bin donated by Canterbury City Council was Terry Jewis of Calcott Hill Sturry,

He submitted a very comprehensive entry which demonstrated his systems of collecting and saving rain water from various roofs, from waste water from the dishwasher and washing machines and how he fed the filtered water by gravity using the slope of his patio to use on his vegetable beds.

He finishes his entry by saying " Apart from searching the internet for the red inline water filter the whole scheme hasn't cost me a penny. It has been made from bits and pieces and items I have been given or left over from other projects and I have reduced my water bill by about 40% and saved litres of water."

Beat the Drought - Win £50 and a Trophy

In the light of the current hosepipe ban which was announced by all major water companies in the South East as from beginning of April and to encourage all gardeners to become more resourceful and economic in their use of water generally Herne Bay in Bloom are launching a competition to find the most innovative and creative ways of beating the drought. This should include the use of “Grey Water”, stored water and/or methods of retaining or conserving water.

The means of getting water to your displays, gardens or plants should be illustrated or described in your own words stating why your idea is so creative and you can also provide images of any systems that you are already using so we can assess the originality of your entry.

We are trying to encourage people to really think “outside the box” and to be as imaginative possible and a prize of £50 awaits the person who it is judged has the most innovative ideas.

A selection of the best ideas that are sent to us will be published on our website in due course,

All entries can either be sent by email to herne_bayinbloom@live.co.uk or by post to The Secretary Herne Bay In Bloom 97 Central Parade Herne Bay CT6 5JJ Closing date will be Monday 25th June 2012.
