Results of HBIB "Beat the Drought Competition"

Thank you to everyone who entered our "Beat The Drought" competition which was launched in April after the announcement of the hosepipe ban in the South East by Southern and South East Water Companies.

We are please to announce that the winner of the £50 prize and the water butt and compost bin donated by Canterbury City Council was Terry Jewis of Calcott Hill Sturry,

He submitted a very comprehensive entry which demonstrated his systems of collecting and saving rain water from various roofs, from waste water from the dishwasher and washing machines and how he fed the filtered water by gravity using the slope of his patio to use on his vegetable beds.

He finishes his entry by saying " Apart from searching the internet for the red inline water filter the whole scheme hasn't cost me a penny. It has been made from bits and pieces and items I have been given or left over from other projects and I have reduced my water bill by about 40% and saved litres of water."

"B" is for "Blooming Bay" Planting up the Town

New Bollard Planters beside The Rose Inn (click on image for full view)Volunteers Planting three tier container in Mortimer St (click on image for full view)This week the town has started to burst into bloom. The Friends of Herne Bay in Bloom  work party have been busy taking delivery of plants grown  on for them by Meadow Grange Nurseries since the early Spring

They have cleared all the planters in Mortimer Street and planted them with a "red white and blue" theme. In addition they have planted and supplied Mortimer Street,Sea Street and Beltinge village shopkeepers with  80+ pots for display outside their premises. They have also replanted our large four -tier planter on Eddington roundabout.

Serco have installed the many barrier troughs and bollard planters for us throughout the town as well as the attractive Basket Tree outside The Rose Inn in Mortimer Street. These have also been grown on for us by Meadow Grange Nurseries and are already making a striking display.

We have a willing group of shopkeepers and residents to whom we give free watering cans who then volunteer to water containers and troughs near to their premises but we are always looking for more helpers to water,dead-head and help maintain our colourful displays ensuring that they stay healthy and fresh for the whole season. Please register through this website if you can help in anyway.

Serco have offered to water displays that are not near to any residents and Vanessa Field  of The Old Firm in Mortimer Street with a small group of friends operates our water bowser, donated by Denne Construction and CoPlan Designs last year, to water the planters within the Mortimer Street precinct area.

The Herne Bay in Bloom team would like to thank all our supporters, volunteers and sponsors for all their hard work so far this year. Our judging dates are booked for South & South East in Bloom on 19th July and Britain in Bloom for the 30th July so here's to another "Blooming" successful outcome this year.

Herne Bay in Bloom volunteers clearing the Queen's Ave area

A group of volunteers and residents led by Herne Bay in Bloom Friends Co-ordinator Joyce Phillips have recently been hard at work clearing the overgrown corner of Queen's Avenue / Reculver Road beside The Rising Sun. It has been seeded with an Urban Meadow mix of  perennial and annual of flowers plus some other Spring flowering bulbs and some large stones have been placed round it to stop any damage by parking vehicles.

Hopefully it will be a blaze of colour come mid Summer. If anyone knows of any similar area that requires assistance with tidying. weeding etc please contArea now cleared and reseeded(Click on images for full viewact Herne Bay in Bloom Secretary via this website.

Hampton Green Seaside Garden

Hampton Green Seaside Garden(with blue waves surrounded by golden sand) Please click on the image for full view

This lovely seaside garden has now been completed  thanks to the hard work of Peter Buscall and his band of willing workers from Family Investment Homes who are based at Elham Valley Vineyards.

We all think it looks stunning and a lovely lady who was walking her dog passed whilst we were up there last week stopped us and said" Thank you for making this garden we stop every time we pass and it really makes our day."

High praise indeed -  and we at Herne Bay in Bloom are really pleased that this is the effect that it has because it really makes our day as well to think that all the hard work  that has gone into it is appreciated.

We hope all the residents and visitors to the Hampton Leisure gardens continue to enjoy the  garden as it developes over the next few years
